John Ritho Kihoi, 60 years old, who is the father of the family, was jailed along with his three sons and one son-in-law after being found guilty of causing serious harm.

How the Nyeri family of 5 found themselves in prison

Speaking on Simon Kibe's Njera-Ini Citu (Our Prisons) program, the five family members detained in Nyeri King'o prisons recounted the events that led to their imprisonment.

“I was at a bar accompanied by my son-in-law, I had money after selling onions and one of the people there asked me to buy him a drink, I did so and his wife also asked for the same,” Kihoi told.

The old man said that the man who bought him a drink was not happy with him for also buying beer for his wife, which was the source of their conflict, which led to a fight between them outside the bar.

“I remember he threw a stone at me, but we were both drunk, so I can't remember everything that happened that night.”

Kihoi said the man's wife tried to find him the next morning, but he asked her to break up with him due to the conflict that happened the night before.

“However, one year after the incident, I was arrested, the complainant claimed that my sons and I beat him that night and that's how we were all arrested, the judge found us guilty and together we were sentenced to 100 years in prison. That means each of us will serve 20 years in prison and will be released in 2037,” he said.

The man insists that his sons are innocent and were not involved in the fight between him and the complainant.

“I tried to tell the court that my sons were not even there but my request was not heard,” he said bitterly.

The five men are in a very bad situation because the women in their family are alone and there is no one to protect them or provide for them.

“I hope my wife will continue to be strong and take care of our children,” one of the man's sons said tearfully.
