Kalonzo Musyoka Rejected Invitation to Attend the Launch of Raila's Ambition for the AUC Seat

Nairobi – Leader of the party Wiper Democratic Movement Kalonzo Musyoka declined an invitation to attend the launch of Raila Odinga's bid for the chairmanship of the African Union Commission (AUC).

Why did Kalonzo not attend the event Raila

Kalonzo was among the leaders invited to attend the State House event, Nairobi on Tuesday, August 27.

The former vice president addressed a press conference, explaining why he did not attend the highly publicized event.

According to Kalonzo, he intended to show his new status as the official leader of the opposition to Kenyans.

“I am not in the White House today because I want to show you that I am the official leader of the opposition. The resolution will not be deleted,” Kalonzo said.

Did the Azimio leaders approve Raila's request?

However, along with other leaders of Declaration of UnityKalonzo approved Raila's bid to compete for the AUC position.

In a statement, Azimio leaders cited Raila's extensive political experience, commitment to Pan-African values, and record of conflict resolution as key reasons for their support.

The opposition coalition expressed confidence in Raila's ability to lead the African Union to greater peace, stability and prosperity.

“We contribute to Africa and the world our best and most famous leader,” said the statement.

What did ODM say about Azimio's leadership?

At the same time, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) dismissed plans by the United Declaration parties to replace Raila as the leader of the opposition coalition.

In a press conference on Monday, August 19, ODM chairwoman Gladys Wanga criticized Azimio leaders questioning Raila's commitment to the opposition.

Wanga said it was with bad intentions for Azimio leaders to hide behind the recent appointment of ODM officials to the Cabinet to undermine the former prime minister.

According to Wanga, some Azimio leaders were trying to turn Raila into endorsing them before the 2027 elections.
