Speaking to TV 47, the bride's father, Javan Masakhwe, said his 29-year-old daughter traveled home on Friday, August 23, to prepare for the dowry ceremony.

After the ceremony, the groom's family insisted on taking Brenda citing traditions and customs.

“When the brothers-in-law came, they said they could not leave the daughter while insisting that they must go with her, the Probox carrying my daughter was behind the other cars they brought,” he said.

Javan also remembered how his daughter brought him gifts every time he visited, explaining how he would miss that part of her.

“He would bring me a duvet. Sometimes he would bring me a shirt or pants, among other things,” he said.

Brenda's mother explained how important her daughter was in their family, even contributing to the construction of their house.

“He told me never to borrow anything from anyone and to call him instead. I have indeed lost a very important child to me. He is the one who built this house for me,” he said bitterly.

The five who lost their lives are scheduled to be buried in Marakwet. Their family is now asking the government and the Good Samaritans for help with funeral expenses.
