Why did KNUT call off their strike?
In a press conference on Sunday, August 25, the Secretary General of KNUT Collina Oyuu said the union has agreed to withdraw their previous strike notice.
Oyuu said there has been progress in dealing with the issues they raised and that they are committed to solving them all.
The KNUT boss said the decision to call off the strike was made to give the Teachers Recruitment Commission (TSC) time to address the main demands of the workers.
“Therefore, NEC, today August 25, 2024, has agreed to cancel the strike notice that was going to last at midnight on August 25, 2024, since we started dealing with the remaining administrative issues. return to work from Monday, August 26, 2024,” Oyuu said.
He asked the teachers to report to their workplace, adding that the union will reactivate the strike notice if TSC it will fail to address all their issues.
“At the same time, we assure our members that the union is committed to resolving the issues otherwise we will return to the original position as the strike notice has only been withdrawn,” KNUT said.

At the same time, the Treasury Secretary John Mbadi apologized for his earlier comments regarding the permanent employment of 20,000 Junior High School teachers.
Mbadi admitted that he was misinformed about the budgetary situation of the teachers and explained that his previous remarks were aimed at showing the current financial deficit, which could affect the payment of salaries from July to December.
He emphasized that the transition to permanent employment, planned for January 2025, has already been provided in the budget.
Mbadi also noted that the Teachers Recruitment Commission (TSC) has been informed about the changes.
