Nairobi – Kenyans have expressed different opinions following ODM leader Raila Odinga's announcement that he will not fully participate in Kenyan politics.
Why is Raila Odinga leaving politics in Kenya?
On Wednesday, August 21, the leader of the Declaration of Unity announced that he will focus on campaigns on the continent as he seeks the position of chairman of the African Union Commission (AUC).
The veteran politician indicated that he is currently in a transition phase from participating fully in politics Kenya to continental politics.

“You know that I will start working on this continent once I am elected in February 2025. Currently, I am participating in (AUC) campaigns, but that does not mean that Kenya will cease to exist. I will not participate in Kenyan politics from now on as I focus on the campaign on the continent,” Raila he said.
Raila's unexpected announcement drew mixed reactions from Kenyans.
Some said they will miss Raila's involvement in local politics, considering his role in shaping Kenya's political situation.

Others seemed to wish him well, given ODM's recent move to join President William Ruto's government.

Why is Kalonzo not happy with Raila leading the opposition
Elsewhere, the leader of the Wiper Democratic Movement party, Kalonzo Musyoka vowed to take over the leadership of the Unity Declaration One Kenya party.
During a meeting with journalists in the city Embu On Sunday, August 18, Kalonzo said ODM leader Raila Odinga will not be allowed to continue leading the opposition after joining forces with President William Ruto.
According to Kalonzo, Raila cannot continue to lead the Unity Declaration, while his party has 'joined' the wider government.
