Meru – Former governor Kawira Mwangaza he was dismissed by a unanimous vote of the senators on all three charges brought against him.
Members of the County Assembly argued that, despite surviving two previous impeachment attempts, Governor Mwangaza continued to abuse his office, violate the Constitution and other laws, and engage in misconduct.
One major charge against him involved misleading the public by falsely claiming that KSh 86 million was collected through Paybill number 247247, Account Number 0400163917899, following the killing of Daniel Muthiani, alias Sniper.
In fact, only KSh 286,516 was collected, a misrepresentation that seemed to violate the standards of ethics and dignity expected of government officials.
Residents of Meru celebrate the release of Mwangaza
Following the Senate's decision to remove him from office, several residents celebrated at midnight, singing farewell songs and expressing their belief that he will now be held accountable for his alleged role in Sniper's death.
Elsewhere, residents of Meru gathered to watch the proceedings of the Senate. When Speaker Amason Kingi announced that the Senate had approved the impeachment measure, the group erupted with joy, enjoying the victory they considered important.
How did the senators vote to remove Mwangaza?
In another story, for the first charge against Mwangaza, related to misconduct and violation of the law, 26 senators voted 'yes', four voted 'no' and 14 did not vote.
On the second charge of gross misconduct, 26 senators supported the 'yes' vote, two against, and 14 abstained.
Regarding the third charge of abuse of office, 27 senators voted 'yes', one voted 'no' and 14 did not vote.
