Nairobi – The Senate has approved the dismissal of the Governor of Meru Kawira Mwangazaas decided by the Members of the County Assembly (MCAs).
The MCAs had accused Mwangaza of gross misconduct, abuse of office, and serious violations of the Constitution and other laws.
Early on Wednesday, August 21, the Senate concluded their deliberations, with most of the leaders finding Mwangaza guilty of all crimes. More than 90% of the votes cast supported his impeachment.
“The Senate has voted tonight to support the decision of the County Assembly Meru remove him from office by firing the governor of Meru county, Hon Kawira Mwangaza.
The senators voted to support three charges which are: Gross Violation of the Constitution and other laws, gross misconduct and abuse of office. Therefore, Hon Mwangaza is ceasing to hold that position,” said Speaker Amason Kingi.
However, the process was not without controversy. Some senators criticized Speaker Kingi for not allowing enough time to vote, especially for those attending the sessions closely.
Mutuma M' Ethingia, who was Mwangaza's deputy, will be the fourth governor of Meru.
