The Senate confirmed the dismissal of the Meru governor Kawira Mwangaza on Wednesday, August 21, a decision previously made by the Members of the County Assembly (MCAs).
Why was Kawira Mwangaza sacked?
The MCAs accused Mwangaza of abuse of office, gross misconduct, and violation of the constitution and other laws.
The Senate concluded its deliberations, with many leaders finding Mwangaza guilty of all crimes.
However, the process was not without controversy, as some senators criticized Speaker Amason Kingi for not allowing enough time for voting, especially for those attending the sessions closely.
How did the Senators vote to fire Mwangaza?
In the first charge against Mwangaza, involving misconduct and breaking the law, 26 voted 'yes', four voted 'no' and 14 did not vote.
On the second charge of gross misconduct, 26 senators voted 'yes,' two voted 'no,' and 14 did not vote.
On the third charge of abuse of office, 27 senators voted 'yes', one voted 'no' and 14 did not vote.
Most of those who did not vote join opposition parties.
What is next for Meru county?
Under the Constitution, the deputy governor of Meru Mutuma M'Ethingia is set to take over as county governor for the remainder of the term.
In cases where the county governor's office becomes vacant, the constitution states that the deputy governor must step in for the remainder of the term.
Sniper's mother mourns during the trial to remove Mwangaza
During the session, the mother of a Meru political activist who was killed by blogger Daniel Muthiani, also known as 'Sniper,' caused an incident outside the Senate chambers.
Meru county executive director for legal affairs Dickson Munene had just taken the stand when an elderly woman, Anne Kanjeru, screamed, drawing the attention of the speaker.
Kingi stopped the operation and instructed the sergeant at arms to restore order by removing the woman from the building.
