Acting Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli revealed that preliminary investigation showed the incident was an inside job.

He suggested that the officers on duty deliberately slacked off to help the suspects gain their freedom.

Among the detained officers are Gigiri's OCS and the sub-county police commander.

“Our initial investigation shows that the escape was aided by insiders given that officers were properly deployed to control the situation. Following the situation, I have detained eight officers who were on duty last night, among them the Gigiri sub-county police commander, the officer. Station Commander of the Gigiri Police, and the officer on duty,” Masengeli told reporters at the station.

What appeal did Masengeli give to Kenyans?

He said the officers will face the force of law if the results of the investigation implicate them.

The search for the fugitives began, with Masengeli calling on the public to submit information that could lead to their finding.

“We have a thorough investigation underway to determine what happened, how it happened and who is responsible,” he added.
