Standard Media Freelance Journalist Threatens To Harm Himself Demanding His Salary: “Give Me Money or Die”

What did the Standard Media employee do?

In a video shared online, the male employee is seen wearing his office badge around his neck at the company premises.

The man then records a video telling his social media followers that his goal is to get the company to pay him.

He confirmed his willingness to do anything and expressed his willingness to risk everything including his life so that the company would pay him a salary.

“So the standard media have refused to pay me even if it is their fault, so I die here today or I get my money,” he said.

He claimed that the media ignored his requests, thus making him visit the company to demand his payment.

“I'm not leaving here without money, I'm leaving here in two ways, I need to get there one way or the other. So either I die or I get my money. I hope, you guys see this while I'm still alive.” he said.

How did Standard respond?

In a statement seen by TUKO.co.ke, the news agency sympathized with the employee and emphasized that they have taken care of his immediate needs.

“We took note of the sad incident that occurred this afternoon involving one of our freelancers who is currently on leave. We recognize the significant impact that the delay in payment has caused, especially given the financial challenges the company is going through,” The statement was read in part.

The company also said it remains committed to resolving all unpaid salary arrears and ensuring timely payments.

Standard Media laid off more than 300 employees

The news agency had announced the layoff of more than 300 employees in various departments as part of the restructuring process.

According to a statement from the Group, affected employees were to be notified individually and would receive one month's notice from Wednesday, July 31.

The board said that trends in media consumption, resulting from technological advances in digital media and changing preferences, have created a difficult operating environment and long-term problems in generating revenue.
