Paris 2024: Nigeria eliminated despite spirited fight to stay in Olympic race

Spain and Japan progressed automatically after the world champions beat Brazil 2-0 in the other group fixture.

The Super Falcons of Nigeria have been eliminated from the women’s football event at the 2024 Paris Olympics after losing 3-1 to Japan in their final Group C game at La Beaujoire Stadium.

The game kicked off with high intensity, and Japan quickly asserted their dominance.

In the 22nd minute, Japan’s Ueki R. provided an assist to Hamano M who calmly slotted the ball into the net to give Japan a 1-0 lead.

Japan continued to press, and their efforts paid off once more when Tanaka M. found the back of the net in the 32nd minute, making it 2-0.

Nigeria responded with increased urgency and managed to pull a goal back just before halftime.

Echegini O. scored in the 42nd minute with an assist from Ucheibe C bringing the score to 2-1.

In injury time, Kitagawa H sealed the game with a decisive goal in the 45+5′ minute, giving Japan a comfortable 3-1 lead.
