Liverpool star Darwin Nunez and other Uruguayan players were involved in a brawl with Colombia fans that broke out after their 1-0 Copa America semi-final defeat on Wednesday.
Uruguayan forward Nunez fired several punches at Colombian fans after jumping into the crowd at Charlotte's Bank of America Stadium following an upset loss to Colombia.
Uruguay's central defender, Jose Maria Gimenez, said the players jumped into the riot out of concern for the safety of their family members and loved ones who were watching the game.
“This is a tragedy. Our family was in danger. We had to go to the stage to take out our loved ones, with babies,” the Atletico Madrid player said.
“There was not a single police officer… I hope the organizers will consider this to be a little more careful with the family.
“Every riot has been happening because there are people who don't know how to handle the several drinks they use.”
